The Stone Roses are an influential English rock band from Manchester, formed in 1983. Pioneers of the Madchester scene, the group—fronted by Ian Brown with guitarist John Squire, bassist Gary “Mani” Mounfield and drummer Reni—combined indie rock, psychedelia and danceable grooves. Their 1989 self-titled debut is widely regarded as one of Britain’s greatest albums, with anthems like I Wanna Be Adored and Fools Gold. Their sound shaped British rock and helped usher in the Britpop era.
Gary “Mani” Mounfield, the band’s charismatic bassist, was essential to their rhythmic identity. He joined in 1987 and played on both of the Roses’ studio albums before their 1996 split, later joining Primal Scream and reuniting with the Roses in 2011. Mani died at age 63 in November 2025, peacefully in his sleep. Tributes from peers highlighted his warm personality, infectious bass-lines and enduring impact on British music. He is survived by his twin sons.
