Paul Simon, one of America’s most enduring songwriters, built his reputation on poetic lyrics, restless curiosity, and a gift for melody that spanned folk, rock, and world music. His 1986 album Graceland stands as his boldest and most influential statement. Recorded largely in South Africa during apartheid, the record fused Simon’s storytelling with township jive, mbaqanga rhythms, and Zulu choral traditions. Featuring Ladysmith Black Mambazo and musicians like guitarist Ray Phiri, Graceland won the Grammy for Album of the Year and sparked global conversations about cultural collaboration and appropriation. It remains a landmark in pop music’s cross-cultural dialogue.
