South Downs' songwriter Maisie Peters releases her beautiful first single today, 'Place We Were Made'.

It's a strikingly mature yet enduringly naive introduction to Maisie, a still-just-17-year-old evidently grappling with the love/hate relationship over where you are from (or in her words: "an Enid Blyton village, with a Co-Op") and -as with many of her generation -the changing outside world you must now navigate.Having written for as long as she can remember -and even felt bold enough to enter the Guardian's Short Story competition aged 9, with an admittedly terrible submission -it was this voracious appetite for fiction that first offered Maisie a window into alternate realities, in which music may also be reachable. From F Scott Fitzgerald and Donna Tartt came a love for sometimes bittersweet, sometimes bolshy storyteller-pop, with early influences on her music ranging from Carly Rae Jepson and Lorde to the strong female figures in Maisie's own life (her mother, her polar-opposite twin sister).

Maisie Peter's first track, 'Place We Were Made', is an emotionally raw, suitably affecting tribute to friends, and an uncertain future: written after a disaster-turned-triumph of a New Year's Eve (which included cancelled plans, and unexpected reunions), the result is a musical Kodak moment for those golden times you may not get back again. Now writing songs and exploring new sounds at a pace befitting a child of the Internet, the unique point in history that Maisie finds herself is becoming an important backdrop ("on the one hand, there have never been so many opportunities to connect with people or express yourself; on the other there's so much disillusionment with the adults who seem intent on fucking it up for us."). Whatever lies ahead, her first single suggests that 'Place We Were Made' will always go with you, and in Maisie Peters, British pop may have found its next bright young thing.
